How to get involved in preserving the Drum and Bell Tower neighborhood

Preserving Gulou for future generations

The Drum and Bell Tower neighborhood, also known as Gulou among both locals and foreigners living in Beijing, is a unique neighborhood. Despite Gulou’s cultural importance, multiple sources have indicated that a 5 billion RMB budget has been allocated to convert 12.5 hectares of the Drum and Bell Tower area into a ‘Beijing Time Cultural City’ – putting the neighborhood in serious danger. Once again, Old Beijing is facing another serious threat of demolition. On one side we have well-established laws and regulations that stand to protect Beijing’s history and culture. On the other side, however, there is a 5 billion RMB project waiting to commence.

What can you do?

There are several things that concerned Beijingers can do to help protect Gulou:

  • Talk about it!
  • Help to create awareness in your local area and community by talking to friends and forwarding on information about the plan.
  • Write blogs, use social media(Facebook, Twitter etc.) or submit letters and articles to newspapers, magazines, radio and university press (overseas and locally). Local and international connections and publicity is important for cases such as these and have previously helped to pressure change, such as in the recent case of protecting Keyuan and Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin’s former residence.
  • Post pictures of the Drum and Bell Tower neighborhood on the Internet so more people can see the of this unique area.
  • If your university has an active Cultural Heritage (or Asian Studies) faculty, see if it might take an interest in studying this specific case or cultural heritage protection in China in general.
  • Sign-up to CHP’s monthly e-newsletter and keep reading and visiting our website and social media sites, which will have updates from CHP.
  • Forward on any information you might hear about the planned development to CHP.
  • Attend future events hosted by CHP.
  • Donate, become a corporate partner or volunteer at CHP to help us increase the resources that we can allocate to this.
