UCCA auditorium was packed with Beijing cultural preservation and architectural enthusiasts in the early afternoon of Saturday, May 7 for CHP’s first documentary screening in 2011, Getting Closer to Our Cultural Heritage: A Documentary Screening & A Dialog. After a short welcome speech by CHP’s Managing Director Lu Lei, Head of Beijing Ancient Architecture Research Center Xu Chuhui, shared with the crowd five unique characteristics of Beijing architecture and rare historical insights. Following the talk, event attendees watched a three-part documentary, The Fate of Old Beijing: The Vanishing Hutong produced by Jonah Kessel & Kit Gillet, in which presents the modern day challenges that hutong residents face on a daily basis. CHP was fortunate to have both documentary producers presented at the event to share with us their behind-the-scene thoughts.

He Shuzong, Founder and Chairman of CHP, wrapped up the event with his final remarks on the challenges of cultural heritage protection, both in Beijing and beyond, and the importance of awareness raising in shaping the Chinese society.

CHP was delighted to see many familiar and new faces at our documentary screening & a dialog event. We will be rolling out more awareness-raising and fundraising events for the rest of the year. We hope you can join us!

CHP sincerely thanks UCCA for providing the venue without charge, Mr. Xu Chuhui, Jonah Kessel, and Kit Gillet for making this event possible.

The Fate of Old Beijing: The Vanishing Hutong is available at Jonah Kessel’s website.
