Open Letter to the Government of the People’s Republic of China

Recognizing the commitment of the Government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) to the protection and preservation of its diverse and unique cultural heritage, the members of the ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Earthen Architectural Heritage (ISCEAH) are surprised and concerned by news related to the ongoing demolition and planned reconstruction of the historic center, often called the Old Town of Kashgar (喀什), Xinjiang Province, PRC. Activities in Cultural Heritage Day

June 13,2009 was the fourth annual “Cultural Heritage Day.” Beijing Cultural Heritage Protection Center (CHP) and thirteen volunteers distributed free “Beijing Cultural Heritage Protection Maps” in seven districts of Old Beijing. 

The maps were a joint effort by CHP and Qizhi Tong Company to better people’s understanding of cultural heritage protection. The map shows both the municipality of Beijing and the national historical monument sites, as well as information on Old Beijing’s forty three historical protection sites.  Read more

Jiuyan Lou Investigation


For a 69-year-old man, he hiked briskly up the face of the mountain side to the Nine Eye Tower (Jiuyan Lou) of the Jiankou portion of the Great Wall, barely breaking a sweat.  Along the way, he paused to point out unique trees and plants, and wild boar tracks.

Our guide, Meng Qiliang, grew up in Xizhazhi village, at the foot of the Huoyan Mountains.  Like other villagers, he grew up admiring the majestic beauty of the Great Wall. Read more...

The People are the Rightful Owners of Cultural Heritage

"The people are the rightful owners of cultural heritage." This is one view that the government is currently emphasizing. Recently during a speech at the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Director-General of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage (SACH), Mr. Shan Jixiang, clearly stated that: “The people are the rightful owners of cultural heritage. Their active participation and support are the material strength on which the existence and development of cultural heritage depends. They are the hope and the future.” Through reports from Xinhua News Agency and other media outlets, his words are having a strong impact. Cong Jiang Archive Project Completes Its First Field Investigation

From May 4th to 8th , CHP’s Cong Jiang Archive Project officer traveled with officials from UNESCO, UNFAO, and the UNDP-Spain Millennium Development Goals Achievement Fund to Guiyang and Cong Jiang County in Guizhou.  From May 9th to the 18th , the director traveled by herself to continue carrying out investigations, research, and hold discussions and visit with the local people.
